Abstract

News headlines are not only the “eyes” of the news text, but also play an important role in news. So it is very important to translate news headlines. Intertextulity theory view any text as the result of absorption and transformation of other texts. While translation covers the generation of one text, and the text is the result of absorption and transformation of other texts. Hence, translation can be explained by a special intertextual activity. In terms of the classification of intertextuality, different scholars have different opinions.

Based on Xin Bin’s classification, the paper will study the translation of English news headlines from generic intertextuality and specific intertextuality. Generic intertextuality has two forms in English news headlines. One is mixed use of words from different styles, the other is combined language genres and horizontal regulations. While specific intertextuality has three forms: allusion, parody and quotation. Therefore, translators need to reflect the intertextual forms when translating, and transform them based on the concrete context. Finally, the paper is beneficial to understand the meanings of English new headlines and upgrade the translation quality. And it also provides a theoretical guidance for further study.
