Abstract: Based on theories concerning Chinese and Western thinking modes as well as American slang, the present paper is intended to make an analysis of differences between Chinese and American thinking modes as shown in the Chinese translation of slang words in American dramas. This paper mainly adopted the case study method to describe the features and strategies of American slang translation in detail. It deals with one of the most popular American TV series Gossip Girl and chooses several typical slang expressions in it in order to analyze and summarize five features of slang translation in Gossip Girl: 1.nationality, 2.vividness, 3.integrity, 4. harmoniousness, 5.metaphor. In addition, through a detailed analysis of some slang translation in Gossip Girl, the author describes four strategies of American slang translation: 1. literal translation, 2.liberal translation, 3. abbreviation, 4. ellipsis. In this paper, American slang is regarded as an entry point for analyzing the differences between Chinese and American thinking modes, with the help of which, English learners can get a fairly profound understanding of it so as to improve their comprehension of the American thinking mode and cultural values as well as understanding and application of American slang. What’s more, this paper is of great help for English language learning and understanding, as the analysis of this paper also helps to avoid the American slang intercultural communication pragmatic failure, and to improve English learners' competence of translation.
