Abstract:

 Phonics is an important teaching method of vocabulary teaching for kindergartens and primary schools in English-speaking countries. It effectively cultivates vocabulary comprehension, pronunciation, spelling skills, especially the literacy development of the students, and therefore improves students’ overall reading ability. Literacy development is an important part of English learning. It helps pupils recognize unfamiliar words when they are reading. And this is a very important foundation for students to gradually progress towards independent reading. Students can accumulate a large amount of vocabulary, and make a good foundation for their English learning.

 In China, English teaching in primary schools mainly focuses on the skills of listening and speaking. Pupils in the first two years of English learning are not required to write alphabets or to spell English words in many primary schools. Students may be taught the international phonetic system in junior high schools; however, they are not guided to build the relationship between word spelling and word pronunciation. This phenomenon leads to mispronunciation. Teaching phonics, on the other hand, is a good way to develop literacy, which may positively influence English teaching in China, make up for the deficiency of English teaching in primary schools. However, because of the differences between foreign language and mother tongue learning, English phonics in China needs to be adopted with appropriate strategies in order to meet our students’ learning needs..

Based on the literacy development in primary schools, the author carried out an experiment on phonics teaching. Analysis of this study aims to investigate the teaching methods, and the teaching processes of using phonics in English classrooms,and to explore how to promote literacy development with phonics teaching, including the improvement of students’ literacy development , vocabulary comprehensions, pronunciation and spelling skills.
