Abstract
The Chinese idioms have witnessed a distant origin and a long development of traditional Chinese culture, which are the cultural quintessence of Chinese nation, the essence of national language. It has shown the Chinese peoples’ opinions on the world, life and many other things and is full of rich cultural meanings. So, the translation of the Chinese idioms seems to be of vital importance for us.
This paper is mainly talking about the translation of the Chinese idioms based on inter-cultural communication. First of all, it introduces the definition of the Chinese idioms, including the source, classification, function and so on; then the thesis illustrates the effect and the cause of the preservation of cultural image in translation of Chinese idioms by the comparison of the Sino-Western cultural differences; at last, the thesis puts forward four related translation strategies with examples for solving this problems. The five strategies are preserving the image, transplanting the image, converting the image, abandoning the image and adding the image. I hope that this paper will enrich and develop the related research of preserving the image in the translation of Chinese idioms.
