Abstract:Any country in the world has to contact with the outside. Information is transmitted through news media, which inevitably plays an important role in the process of information communication. In English news, there are many foreign words, so this thesis analyzes pragmatic features and functions of foreign words in modern news English. This thesis starts with definition of foreign words, introduces sources of foreign words in English, and reasons for foreign words’ entering English. Then it introduces pragmatic features of foreign words in news English and indicates that the pragmatic features mainly include direct borrowing, localization and derivation. The thesis further introduces pragmatic functions of foreign words in news English, which includes filling the gap, causing association of thought, expressing euphemistically and pursuing novelty. Finally, it points out the importance of foreign words in news English.
