ABSTRACT:The Republic of Wine is one of Mo Yan’s excellent works, which’s characterized with “hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary”. It’s a literary work with numerous culturally-loaded words. Howard Goldblatt, a famous American sinologist, has translated it in into English. And his English version is characterized with hybridity. Hybridity was firstly brought up by M.M. Bakhtin in his The Dialogic Imagination, and introduced into the post-colonial theory by Homi K. Bhabha, and then applied in literary translation by Han Ziman. Based on the hybridity theory, this thesis takes examples from The Republic of Wine translated by Goldblatt, discusses the factors that affect the degree of hybridity from aspects of translator, source text, readers’ expectation and target culture, and analyses the hybridity in the target text in levels of language and culture, thus demonstrates the status and significance of hybridization as the third strategy after domestication and foreignization in literary translation.

Key words: The Republic of Wine; hybridity; domestication and foreignization
