ABSTRACT:China is a multi-nationality country, and there are many ethnic groups in China. With the process of globalization, Chinese culture, as well as culture of ethnic minorities are being introduced to the outside world. Many specialists and scholars have done a large number of researches on the culture of ethnic minorities, including Hani people. However, research on the translation of characteristic words of ethnic minority is very sparse, and it is true to Hani words. In this thesis, skopos theory will be applied to seek the appropriate translation methods and strategies in the translation of Hani characteristic words. The major translation strategies, which will be discussed in this paper are literal translation, transliteration plus literal translation, transliteration with annotation, literal translation with annotation and liberal translation etc. Those strategies are expected to contribute to the translation of Hani characteristic words, meanwhile, some suggestions are given to that of other ethnic minorities.
