Abstract:In recent years, with the development of globalization, the economical and cultural communication among countries becomes more frequent. Film has become one of the most important tools to transmit cultures, lifestyles and values. It is also an important way for people to learn foreign cultures. There are only a handful of professional film and television translation agencies in China. The lack of systematic theoretical guidance and translation skills result in uneven level of translation, and even cause some outstanding films can’t be fully appreciated. Under this situation, the studies of film translation are not only of theoretical significance but also of practical significance.

This thesis focuses on the subtitles translation of The Big Bang Theory. It first introduces the features of subtitles translation. Then through the analysis of some examples, it explores how to use the theory of functional equivalence to guide subtitles translation and realize functional equivalence. On the basis of analysis, the author puts forward several translation strategies hoping that it will do some help to English learners.
