Abstract: This thesis is a tentative research on the main character of Santiago in Hemingway’s best-known novel The Old Man and The Sea which reveals the spirit of human being’s wisdom, firmness, and persistence. Santiago is the typical “Code Hero” in Hemingway’s novels. By analyzing the application of symbolism, Santiago’s sublime tragic beauty and Hemingway’s principle of reflecting the real life, this thesis further discusses the main character’s sense of pride, firm faith and endurant spirit of loneliness, with a purpose of getting a better understanding of the spirit of “Code Hero”.

摘要：本文主要探究海明威著名小说《老人与海》中桑地亚哥的的性格特征。这部作品反映了人类的智慧，坚强以及坚持。桑地亚哥是海明威众多作品中“准则英雄”的典型。通过分析小说中象征手法的运用，桑地亚哥崇高的悲剧美感以及基于现实生活的表现手法来剖析桑地亚哥的骄傲心理、坚定信念、以及独自承受孤独的性格特点，由此来更好地领会“准则英雄”的精神。
