Abstract:Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen. The novel has inspired a number of other writers and readers. However, some scholar, who studied Pride and Prejudice, misunderstood the Austen book's general idea and misguided the readers in their views. Seldom could they be aware that prejudice Austen used is not real prejudice, neither is pride. The writer of this thesis tries to clarify the misunderstandings from many aspects. Here, this thesis focuses on six typical points.

Key words: pride and prejudice; self-esteem; First Impressions; euphemism

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen. First published on 28 January 1813, it is her second published novel. Its manuscript was initially written between 1796 and 1797. Called First impressions, it was never published under that title, and in the following revisions it was re-entitled Pride and Prejudice. The novel has inspired a number of other works and readers. However, some scholar, who studied Pride and Prejudice, misunderstood the Austen book's general idea and misguided the readers' view. Therefore, unfortunately, under the influence of that book, some girls want to be Elizabeth and become prejudiced for her dream lover whereas some boys become more proud like Mr. Darcy.
