ABSTRACT:In Austin’s opinion, there are three senses in which saying something may be understood as doing something: locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary. Locutionary is the literal meaning; illocutionary is the purpose, the way we intend to be understood, or certain forces as Austin prefers to say; perlocutionary is the consequential effects of a locution upon the hearer. In the past, many people have analyzed movies, advertisements and dramas with the Speech Act Theory.

Hannah Montana as a new American sitcom, caused a hot discussion after it was screened. This thesis uses Austin’s Speech Act Theory as framework to analyze how the humor was produced in Hannah Montana from Speech Act Theory’s three aspects. This paper is of great benefit for people to understand and appreciate humor in Hannah Montana.
