Abstract:With the popularity and growing effect of cross-cultural communication, more and more English films are flowing into China. Subtitle translation has been an important part in the whole translation field. Being different from translating books or other presswork, translation of film subtitles is controlled by some elements. This paper attempts to categorize several translation strategies used in subtitle translation in the perspective of Relevance Theory, and analyzes how Optimal Relevance contributes to successful realization of communicative effect through a case study on the film Gone with the Wind. In the paper, three translation strategies are put forward: domestication translation, condensation and changing implicature to explicature. They are all applied in the subtitle translation of Gone with the Wind. By analyzing some examples and giving comments, the paper tries to illustrate how Relevance Theory makes a difference in subtitle translation. In closing, the paper draws a conclusion that subtitle translator should always be guided by the Optimal Relevance principle to produce the most relevant information, and to make the audience use the least effort to get the greatest contextual effect.

摘要:随着中外文化交流的日益加强, 作为重要传媒手段的西方影视作品不断涌入中国市场, 成为通俗文化不可或缺的组成部分; 影视翻译也应运而生。如何翻译好外国影视作品, 已成为一个亟待解决的课题。由于受诸多因素制约, 电影字幕翻译评价标准和翻译策略与传统翻译不同。本文从关联理论的角度, 归纳了几类常用的字幕翻译策略, 并将经典影片《乱世佳人》作为个案进行分析,提出了归化翻译策略、浓缩策略和化暗含为明示的翻译策略。并通过举例和做出评论,深入分析了关联理论在影视作品字幕翻译中所起的作用。本文认为关联理论对字幕翻译有着很强的解释力, 为了实现电影预期的交际效果, 字幕翻译应该以最佳关联原则为指导, 让观众用最小的努力, 获得最大的语境效果。
